Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

A temple built on the rocks at the edge of the sea. Tradition says it was founded in 1376, late in the Goryeo dynasty, by the monk Naong. It burned down during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s and was rebuilt in the 1930s; it has carried its present name since 1974. Walk down the 108 steps and the waves break right below you; cross the bridge to the main hall and the temple and the ocean fit in a single frame. There are many stairs, so wear comfortable shoes.

Ahopsan Forest

A forest tended by the Nampyeong Mun family for nearly 400 years, across nine generations. They kept it uncut through the colonial period and the war, and only opened it to the public in 2016. You walk with your guide along a path of moso bamboo so tall it hides the sky. The films Kundo: Age of the Rampant and The Tiger, and the drama The King: Eternal Monarch, were shot in this grove. The two stone pillars standing in the middle of the bamboo are the gate between two worlds in The King.

Nurimaru APEC House

A round-roofed building at the tip of Dongbaek Island in Haeundae, where the 2005 APEC summit was held. After seeing the conference hall, step outside for a sweeping view of Gwangan Bridge and the Haeundae coast. You also walk the island's seaside path.

Busan Cinema Center

The venue of the Busan International Film Festival's opening ceremony every autumn. During the festival the 4,000-seat outdoor theater fills with audiences, and actors and directors walk in along the red carpet that runs through it. The Big Roof overhead holds the Guinness World Record for the longest cantilever roof, and at night the whole canopy glows with light. Take a photo in front of the BIFF letters beneath it.

About 1 hour

Hocheon Village

A neighborhood of houses stacked up a steep hillside, where the rooftop scenes of the drama Fight for My Way were filmed. After dark the alleys light up and downtown Busan spreads out at your feet. People live here, so we walk through quietly.
